Ali Uzay Peker

BIOGRAPHY

Ali Uzay Peker, Ph.D., is currently a Professor at Middle East Technical University, Graduate Program in Architectural History, teaching courses on Seljuk and Ottoman Architecture as well as medieval cosmology and mysticism. He is an art and architectural historian with published articles in several national and international journals and edited books. His research on symbolism in medieval architecture in Turkey revealed the meanings of the architectural symbols in medieval Anatolia in the Islamic period. He also studied eighteenth-century building complexes like Nur-u Osmaniye in İstanbul, revealing their purpose and meaning. He also published on the building and activities of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal and on the architecture of the upper city of Hasankeyf, a medieval city in southeastern Anatolia. He was the coordinator of the excavations in Sultan Süleyman’s Tomb Complex in Szigetvar, Hungary and published on the project works. Ali Uzay Peker received his PhD from İstanbul Technical University in Art History, MA from Bosphorus University in History and BA from İstanbul University in Art History. He is a member of the Turkish Historical Society Scientific Committee and a member of the UNESCO National Committee on Rapprochement of Cultures, and an experienced educator, administrator, project coordinator, Marie Curie Projects referee and Bologna Expert.
