We are pleased to announce the call for papers/participations for the workshop and symposium, both titled “Expanding Agency: Women and Other Marginalized Actors of Modern Architecture in Turkey,” to be held between 23 and 24 October 2026 at METU Faculty of Architecture.

The Graduate Program in Architectural History is organizing these events in connection with University College Dublin’s exhibition “Expanding Agency: Women, Race, and the Dissemination of Modern Architecture” that will be opened at Middle East Technical University on 23 October 2026.
The workshop and symposium aim to rethink modern architecture in Turkey by moving beyond the male-dominated, state-centered canonical narratives of nation-building. The events focus on uncovering the overlooked contributions of women, non-Muslim/ethnic minorities, queer actors, workers, and other marginalized figures whose labor has mostly remained uncredited in architectural histories.
You are cordially invited to submit an abstract for the workshop or the symposium, or to participate in the events. Please circulate the call among colleagues and students who might be interested.
Workshop: 23 October 2026
Deadline for abstract submissions: 1 September 2026
Symposium: 24 October 2026
Deadline for abstract submissions: 1 August 2026
